The Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit in The Gambia is an established research institute with a track record of achievements in infectious diseases research for more than 50 years. The overall goal of the Unit is to improve the health of people in low income countries, aiming at excellence in research programmes. These focus on the major health problems of the region. The field and laboratory based work draws on excellent research and clinical facilities. The strength of the MRC unit includes rigorous scientific and ethics review processes; established collaboration with top-ranking research institutions in West African, Europe and North America, and established capacity building programme.
